WordPress 3.2 now available

Matt wrote this article on the 4th of July, it was originaly published on the Word press news blog.

I’m excited to announce that WordPress 3.2 is now available to the world, both as an update in your dashboard and a download on WordPress.org. Version 3.2 is our fifteenth major release of WordPress and comes just four months after 3.1 (which coincidentally just passed the 15 million download mark this morning), reflecting the growing speed of development in the WordPress community and our dedication to getting improvements in your hands as soon as possible. We’re dedicating this release to noted composer and pianist George Gershwin.

Before we get to the release, in anticipation of the State of the Word speech at the upcoming WordCamp San Francisco (the annual WordPress conference) we’re doing a survey or census of the WordPress world. If you have a moment, please fill out this survey and we’ll share what we learn by publishing the aggregate results in August.

The focus for this release was making WordPress faster and lighter. The first thing you’ll notice when you log in to 3.2 is a refreshed dashboard design that tightens the typography, design, and code behind the admin. (Rhapsody in Grey?) If you’re starting a new blog, you’ll also appreciate the fully HTML5 new Twenty Eleven theme, fulfilling our plan to replace the default theme every year. Start writing your first post in our redesigned post editor and venture to the full-screen button in the editing toolbar to enter the new distraction-free writing or zen mode, my personal favorite feature of the release. All of the widgets, menus, buttons, and interface elements fade away to allow you to compose and edit your thoughts in a completely clean environment conducive to writing, but when your mouse strays to the top of the screen your most-used shortcuts are right there where you need them. (I like to press F11 to take my browser full-screen, getting rid of even the OS chrome.) (…)

WordPress Security Incident Published on April 13, 2011

Tough note to communicate today: Automattic had a low-level (root) break-in to several of our servers, and potentially anything on those servers could have been revealed.

WordPress: Transfer your WP blog from .com to .org like a professional Published on March 11, 2011

Guided Transfer Upgrade

According to Automattic’s founder Matt Mullenweg, “If you’re on WordPress you’re part of the family, it shouldn’t matter if we host you or not.”

This been said, now wordpress.com will actually help you move from WordPress.com to .org.

With Jetpack, a new plugin from Automattic, people not on WordPress.com can now access features that depend on WordPress.com. Jetpack also provides convenience features that don’t use the cloud, but are now easier to install, or were unavailable as plugins before.

wordpress.com has launched a new upgrade called Guided Transfer where for a $99 one-time fee they’ll handle every detail and tech thingamajig involved in moving your content, theme, domain, and more to any one of the recommended hosts they’ve vetted. (And of course your new site will be Jetpack-powered.)

Quoting “Hew” from wordpress.com: “- Of course we love having you here with us at WordPress.com, but we understand that there are situations where a self-hosted WordPress.org site may be a better choice”

WordPress does rock!

Microsoft joins the “no more IE6″ cause Published on March 7, 2011

Microsoft, trough the website IE6 Count down (ie6countdown.com/index.html) is “asking” people to stop using IE6 once and for all.

From the IE6 Count down website:

Why move off of Internet Explorer 6?

“There are many benefits of upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer – improved speed, tabbed browsing, and better privacy settings to name a few.

The web has changed significantly over the past 10 years. The browser has evolved to adapt to new web technologies, and the latest versions of Internet Explorer help protect you from new attacks and threats.

We recommend that Internet Explorer 6 users upgrade to a newer version of Internet Explorer for a safer browsing experience.”

Now this a good time to start using my “No More IE6″ free Word Press plugin: wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nomoreie6/

have fun!
