While some may be ready to get back to racing, for most the focus is ensuring the horses are healthy. In addition to helping break down food particles and assisting in swallowing, saliva is an important source of bicarbonate that counteracts the acidity of the stomach. More than 80% of neonates with SEM disease have skin vesicles ; those without have infection limited to the eyes and/or oral mucosa. EHV-1 can cause respiratory illness, abortion in pregnant mares, and on occasion a more severe (and sometimes fatal) illness involving the nervous system. Of the three afflicted Placer County animals, at least two are in the Lincoln area, according to the Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center. The three barns remain under quarantine with enhanced biosecurity and  horses’ temperatures are monitored twice daily. Like herpesviruses in other species, these viruses establish latent infection in the majority of horses, which do not show clinical signs but may experience reactivation of infection and shedding of the virus when stressed. Don Hansen of the Oregon Department of Agriculture says sufficient time has passed for most horses that may have been exposed to the virus traced to a horse show in Utah last month. Also today, the Humane Society of the United States urged the Bureau of Land Management to “discourage and, if possible and appropriate, prohibit” owners of private horses from bringing animals at risk of Equine Herpes Virus-1 onto federal lands where they could have contact with wild horses. The horse was removed from Woodbine to isolation on Saturday March 15. That horse did show neurologic symptoms, although animals with that strain of EHV-1 more often have a disease that causes respiratory infection or abortion in pregnant mares. The two horses are located in Washoe County and were exposed to two horses that attended the 2011 National Cutting Horse Association Western National Championships in Ogden, Utah earlier this month. California horses who participated in this event may have been exposed to this EHV-1 virus. However, the Pennsylvania horse did not exhibit symptoms until March 22, well after it had left Maryland.
