How to post to your word press blog via e-mail

Sometimes is useful to be able to publish something or update your word press blog via e-mail.

Weather you are traveling and have limited time, or you have urgent news to share, or you can even be using a mobile phone or PDA and need to update your blog, or you may have several collaborators worldwide wich you don’t allow blog administration, but still want them to be able to post under your supervision, etc.

If your word presss blog is ready to do this, then you will have a clear advantage over your “competition”!

First you need to have a dedicated e-mail account. This means you need to have an email account exclusively for this job.  We shall call it “your unique email address”. This email account needs to be accessible via POP3

These instructions are similar to those on the Word Press Codex:  codex.wordpress.org/Blog_by_Email

Step 1. Create your unique email address

Go to your favorite email provider (Yahoo, Gmail, etc) and create a new email account. Since this should be private, be creative and use a random combination of number and letters with dots  like 23yu47.we34@gmail.com or e45r.3876ytre@yahoo.com don’t worry if it this is unspeakable since you will not ne sharing it with anybody.

In the email provider enable your POP transfer, and get the data you need to configure your POP (username, usually your email address, POP server (incoming) and the Port (number).

Step 2. Word press settings

Go to your admin panel (WP-ADMIN) and on the right hand side menu, almost at the bottom, click:

Settings -> Writing

On the new screen, find the Post via e-mail header, and start filling the blanks:

Mail Server, Port, login name (“your unique email address”), password, and on the select box, choose the default category for posting via e-mail.

Gmail users: You need to activate SSL. Since there is no option to do it in the WP panel, you should replace the POP server with the SSL address. pop.gmail.com (port 995)

Once all data is filled, click the button Save Changes bellow.

Step 3. Create a WP new user.

This user (wich will be you, remotely) should have “your unique email address” as his own. And should have at least Editor Level. (or else all posts will be need superior approval before posting – useful if you have correspondents)

To publish by email you will simply send an e-mail (beware to send it in plain text) to “your unique email address” via you registered email account.

This is for security reasons: – You can only publish if the sender’s email account is also a registered user in your word press blog.

Step 4. Checking e-mail

Don’t forget you need to manually (or not) execute the “receive mail” action by visiting the URL bellow, as described in the Codex.

http://www.yourblog.com/wp-mail.php (Replace yourblog.com by your own blog address)

Enhanced Functionality Hack
You have an alternative to this method with the use of a plug-in named Postie

Postie supports posting to categories, automatic removal of email signatures, POP3/IMAL (+SSL) and more. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/postie/

We will eventually write an article about the Postie plug-in usage.

Have fun!
